Fire Alarm Plans and Code Requirements

Construction Elements

Basic Terms

There are some very familiar common construction terms contained in this short list. However, for the purposes of fire alarm systems, the definitions that are familiar may not be the same as the definitions used in the National Fire Alarm Code, NFPA 72. It is imperative that the definitions as applied in NFPA 72 are understood by designers and installers, so that the proper spacing and location of fire alarm equipment is achieved.

When reviewing these definitions, note that there are basically two major building construction elements that all support members fall under – beams and columns. For the purposes of fire alarm technology, the understanding of beams and joists is critical.
