Resources

There are a number of good resources that discuss building construction relative to the fire service.

Possibly one of the most comprehensive texts is written by Francis L. Brannigan, titled “Building Construction for the Fire Service.” Brannaigan discusses all of the different types of building construction features, and discusses how fire affects them. He discusses many fires and the events that impacted the result of the fire. He also defines and describes different types of construction features.  The Fire Protection Handbook published by NFPA is also an excellent reference that discusses the fundamentals of fire safe building design.

There are also a number of documents available from the AIAAmerican Institute of Architects that will be helpful in furthering your understanding of basic building construction.
