NEC Requirements

Non-Power-Limited

Circuit Conductors

Non-power-limited fire alarm circuits are typically installed using non-power-limited circuit conductors, or Chapter 3 wiring methods. Non-power-limited wire is listed for up to 600 volts.  Non-power-limited conductors must meet the following requirements: Minimum wire size is #18 Wire sizes are all given as American Wire Gauge (AWG) sizes. The smallest size conductor permitted for non-power-limited circuits is 18 AWG.
Conductors larger than #16 must comply with Article 310 NEC Article 310 details the requirements for the type designation, insulation, marking, mechanical strength, ampacity rating, and use of conductors for general electrical wiring installations.
Conductors that are #16 or #18 must be of specific insulation types Article 760 requires that nonpower-limited fire alarm conductors 16 and 18 AWG must be of type KF-2, KFF-2, PAFF, PTFF, PF, PFF, PGF, PGFF, RFH-2, RFHH-2, RFHH-3, SF-2, SFF-2, TF, TFF, TFN, TFFN, ZF, or ZFF. These designations for conductors and insulation types are described in NEC Table 310-13.
