NEC Requirements

Marking

The cable must be marked by the manufacturer as either:

NPLF (non-power-limited fire alarm) – This is a general use fire alarm cable. It may be used for applications where the circuits occupy a single floor.

NPLFR (non-power-limited fire alarm riser) – This cable is intended for use in a vertical cable run in a shaft or from floor-to-floor. NPLFR cable has fire resistant characteristics capable of preventing fire spread from floor-to-floor. This cable may also be used in any applications where NPLF cable would be acceptable.

NPLFP (non-power-limited fire alarm plenum) – Type NPLFP is for use in the space above a suspended ceiling. This is commonly called a "plenum," but is actually defined by the NEC in Section 300.22(C) as an "other space used for environmental air." The NEC defines a "plenum" as a specifically fabricated air handling space. Even though it is commonly referred to as "plenum cable" it may not be installed exposed in a duct or plenum, as defined by the NEC.
