NEC Requirements

Inherently limited

The power source for a power-limited fire alarm circuit must be a listed PLFA (power limited fire alarm) or Class 3 transformer, a listed PLFA or Class 3 power supply, or listed equipment that is marked to identify the PLFA power source. Examples would be a fire alarm control unit with an integral power supply, or a fire alarm circuit card listed for PLFA use. Power limiting is usually accomplished by the fire alarm control unit power supply, either with non-tamperable overcurrent protection, such as a circuit breaker, or through the use of a power supply designed so that the power supply shuts down if the power output is shorted.
