PLFA Cables

Power-limited fire alarm circuits installed using power-limited fire alarm cables (PLFA) must meet the following restrictions: Type of circuits PLFA cables may be used only for power-limited fire alarm circuits. They are never permitted to be used for non-power-limited circuits, even it if installed in raceway. Voltage PLFA cables may be used for circuits up to 150 volts. Raceway In most cases PLFA need not be installed in raceway. Raceway is required where the cables are installed passing through a floor or wall to a height of 7 feet off the floor, unless adequate protection is provided by building construction features, or an equivalent solid guard is provided. The cable must also be in raceway when installed in elevator hoistways. Conductors PLFA multi-conductor cables must contain individual conductors size 26 AWG or larger. Single conductors may not be smaller than 18 AWG. ListingPLFA cables must be specifically listed for their use. Marking PLFA cables must bear the mark of the listing laboratory and be marked as "FPL," "FPLR," "FPLP" or if a permitted substitution is used, that cable must be marked with the equivalent markings.
