In general, the NEC contains some requirements for fire alarm systems that are more stringent than the general wiring requirements for other electrical systems covered by the NEC. However, there are some exceptions concerning fire alarm systems that are less restrictive than the general wiring provisions of the NEC.
Keep in mind that the purpose of the NEC is to achieve electrical safety. The NEC is not concerned whether the fire alarm system operates properly, only that it does not create a shock hazard or a fire hazard. Consequently, the instructions provided by the fire alarm system manufacturer may prohibit the use of specific methods or wiring that are otherwise permitted by the NEC.
