Notification Appliances

Helpful Hint

Fire alarm systems may be installed for a number of different reasons. Depending on local building and fire code requirements, a building may or may not be required to have a fire alarm system to notify all occupants to evacuate in the event of a fire. In some instances speakers used as fire alarm notification appliances may notify some occupants to evacuate, while advising others to relocate to another part of the building or take other action in accordance with the fire safety plan for the building. This type of operation is typical of an Emergency Voice Alarm Communication System found in many high-rise and large areas buildings where total evacuation on every alarm may not be practical. In some cases the fire alarm system may be used to notify members of the fire brigade or other emergency responders within the facility. The exact fire alarm notification requirements and needs of a particular facility should be determined in consultation with a qualified fire protection engineer.
