Introduction to Fire Pumps

Introduction

As it happened...

A normal Sunday evening at the Branch Wood Products Company. The facility is idle most weekends these days, as it was this past weekend. Nobody is on the property, as the management decided to replace the security officers with an electronic fire alarm and security system. Security officers used to be present when the facility was idle, but became a cost-cutting measure some time ago.

This was an old mill building in a major mid-America city. The building was protected by automatic sprinklers and two fire pumps, as well as two separate connections to the municipal water supply. The pumps were tested annually, but both failed within one hour after starting when the fire occurred.
