Introduction to Fire Pumps

Introduction

Overview

Unfortunately, the story above is true – no names have been used. And this happens all too often. A community loses a taxpayer, and jobs get wiped out. A productive operation is lost.

A properly designed and maintained fire pump is an important part of a water supply for a facility. If it isn’t needed, it wouldn’t be provided, so it can be assumed that all fire pumps are necessary pieces of fire protection equipment – part of the holistic Fire protection is an all encompassing process that incorporates a number of items, as they are needed. For example, a facility may need a certain type of construction based on the hazard of the occupancy. Automatic sprinklers and fire alarm systems may also be installed – all based on the occupancy. All of the items that make up the fire protection system are part of the “approach” and work together to satisfy a defined fire protection objective. approach to fire protection.

Fire Pumps may well be one of the building blocks upon which good fire protection is based.  Many times, the flow from sprinklers will be insufficient without a fire pump providing the necessary pressure to operating sprinklers.  If the pump fails, or is not properly designed, installed and maintained...well, you see the picture and the story on the last page.

Learn More Fire pump installations are covered in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 20, Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection. NFPA 20 is referenced by most of the model building and fire codes that apply to construction and safe operation of many different kinds of facilities. This means that many jurisdictions have adopted NFPA 20 as law, through reference in other codes. NFPA 20 will be referenced and discussed further in later parts of this program.
