Introduction to Fire Pumps

Pump Types

Vertical Turbine

In addition to the other types of centrifugal pumps, a specific situation may demand the use of a significantly different type of centrifugal pump.

In many facilities, the water supply for fire protection may be from a tank buried beneath the floor of a building, or from a static supply on the property, such as a pond or river.  This means that the source of water is below the floor, or lower than the floor of the pump room.

In order to get the water into the fire protection system, the water has to be taken from below floor level.  Because of this, a vertical turbine is used.  The actual pump impellars are in the source of water, and are driven through a long shaft connected vertically to the driver above the source of water.
