Introduction to Fire Pumps

Pump Types

Positive Displacement

For special application systems, such as water mist and some foam suppression systems, a higher pressure is desirable, and may not be achieved using a centrifugal pump.  Thus, a positive displacement pump is used.

By its design, a positive displacement pump can achieve pressures limited to the ratings of their components.  In many installations, this may create a dangerous pressure, but when properly designed, the higher pressure makes specific systems more effective.

Positive displacement pumps are typically rated for smaller flows than centrifugal pumps, but at much higher delivery pressures.  They are typically gear or piston pumps.
