The MGM Grand Hotel fire in Las Vegas, Nevada was the second large life-loss Hotel fire in United States history claiming 85 lives. The majority of the deaths were due to smoke exposure. On the morning of November 21, 1980 a fire started at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Wiring behind a wall in the resort's deli simmered, then burned undetected for hours. The result was a flash fire that spread at a rate of 19 feet second through the casino.
