Nature of Smoke

Visibility through Smoke

Calculating Smoke Optical Density

How does one determine the optical density of smoke?

There are many different methods of measuring the optical density of smoke. One common method used, in fire science and fire protection engineering, is to measure the transmittance transmittance:
The fraction of light transmitted through the path length of smoke. of light through smoke. Transmittance is defined as:

T = Ix / Io

where:

T = transmittance, dimensionless
Io = intensity of light at the beginning of the path length
Ix = intensity of light remaining after is has passed through the path length of smoke
